Dr. Mathews was born and raised in Stratford, Texas and graduated from Stratford High School.  He attended the University of Texas in Austin where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Zoology in 1966.  He also attended graduate school there from 1966-1968. Before attending medical school, Dr. Mathews worked as a lab technician at the University of California-Berkley, Department of Biochemistry and for nine years worked as a machinist, instrument designer for Hoefer Scientific Instruments in San Francisco, California.  Dr. Mathews has also been a self-employed cabinetmaker in Austin, Texas.  Dr. Mathews went on to receive his MD degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas in 1984.  He completed one year of residency in Internal Medicine at the Texas Tech affiliated hospitals in Amarillo, Texas in 1985.  Over the years, Dr. Mathews has worked in urgent care clinics and in private practice in Austin, Texas as well as in Rural Health Clinics and VA outpatient clinics in Stratford, Texas. He has done locum tenens work and worked with the Rural Health Clinic and Cimarron Memorial Hospital in Boise City, Oklahoma. Dr. Mathews has since decided to join our healthcare team here in Beaver.
